Looking for a bit of late-night fun during your Port Macquarie holidays? Well, you’ve got plenty to choose from. In this article, we’ll take a look at the best pubs, clubs and bars in the Port Macquarie region. Here they are, in no particular order.
1. Port Macquarie Hotel
Perfectly located right in the heart of Port Macquarie's CBD, the Port Macquarie Hotel is one of the best watering holes on the mid-north coast. The newly renovated Public Bar has state-of-the-art betting facilities, its Rugby Bar dedicates two big screens to lovers of the two rugby codes, and the Port Bar hosts fun activities such as ping pong, DJs and live music. Affectionately referred to as the "Macca", it's popular with locals and visitors alike.
2. Finnian's Irish Tavern
You'd be hard-pressed finding a major Australian centre without its own Irish pub, and Port Macquarie's comes in the form of this fantastic little bar -- Finnian's Irish Tavern. Bringing a taste of Ireland to the mid-north coast, it blends the classic Irish pub atmosphere with a modern and cheerful team. It's particularly well-known in Port Macquarie as a venue for live music, with a range of quality entertainers performing there on a Friday and Saturday night.
3. Altitude Night Club
Situated upstairs at the Galleria Arcade, it was once the location of the infamous Roxy's Nightspot but has since been revamped and renamed, with high quality sound and entertainment and some of the best local and national DJs playing there regularly.
4. Beach House Bar & Grill
Formerly known as the Royal Hotel, it's a great dining and public bar, but once the restaurant closes and the families leave it's actually one of the best night spots in town. Attracting a more mature clientele of young adults (read: not as many teenagers!), it plays the latest electronic music, serves tasty German beer and has great views of the Hastings River.
5. Down Under Night Club
A popular location for both the young and the young at heart, the Down Under Night Club is one of the hottest spots on the Port Macquarie night scene. Most local residents refer to it as "Smuts" -- a shortened version of the club's original name, Helmuts, which stuck due to its colourful description of the venue. With music ranging from classic hits to Eighties rock, R'N'B and the latest dance and pop music, it's a great place to check out during your Port Macquarie stay.
6. Fernhill Tavern
Situated in the industrial area of Port Macquarie but only a few minutes outside of the CBD, this quaint country pub has weekly entertainment and is popular with visitors and locals alike. There's a great beer garden and plenty of tunes to which you can dance the night away. No noise complaints in an industrial area either!
7. Tacking Point Tavern
Located at Lighthouse Beach just 10 minutes south of the Port Macquarie CBD, the "TPT" as it's commonly known has pool comps on Wednesday night, trivia on Thursday, all the footy games throughout the weekend and even a jumping castle for kids on Sundays.
8. Johns River Tavern
If you want to trek outside of Port Macquarie to find an often-undiscovered gem, head to the Johns River Tavern. With rustic timber decor, old blacksmith artefacts and walls full of historical photos, it has an undeniable "escape" feeling to it. It's about 45 minutes south, so it's definitely not walking distance from your Port Macquarie hotel. Be sure to bring a designated driver!
9. Beechwood Hotel
Another one that's a little bit out of the Port Macquarie CBD -- this time 30 minutes west on the Oxley Highway to the little town of Beechwood. Popular for karaoke, it actually hosted heats for the Karaoke World Championships in 2011 to choose the mid-north coast representatives for Australia's national championships. A fun little pub that's definitely worth your visit, but as with Johns River Tavern, you'll have to drive to get there!
